Cowboys’ Mazi Smith missed preseason game after peanut allergy

Cowboys defensive lineman Mazi Smith missed his team’s preseason game against the Raiders over the weekend after reportedly being hospitalized due to an adverse reaction caused by a peanut allergy.

According to a report by Clarence Hill Jr. in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the reaction occurred on the team bus.

Smith “is feeling much better and will practice today,” Hill added in a post on X on Monday.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy addressed the situation during the media presence.

“He’s feeling much better today than he was yesterday,” McCarthy said of Smith.

“He is making very good progress.”

Asked if it was a “scary situation,” McCarthy said: “Honestly, everyone was on the bus. And I walked past him as he got off the bus and I got on. But yes, allergic reactions like that are always serious.”

The Cowboys selected Smith 26th in the first round last year after he shone at Michigan.

He appeared in all 17 games of the regular season and was in the starting lineup three times.

Smith made headlines earlier this year when a storage locker apparently belonging to him was auctioned off for non-payment and the buyer discovered about $20,000 worth of limited-edition sneakers and cleats made by Nike exclusively for Michigan players.
