County officials vote on cannabis sales

County officials vote on cannabis sales

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – On Thursday morning, the Laurel County Fiscal Court voted on Ordinance 460, which would prevent the sale of medical cannabis in Laurel County.

After a brief discussion, the vote was four to three in favor of adopting the regulation.

Some community members said that with the passage of this ordinance, people would no longer have access to a resource that can impact lives.

“We have kids who haven’t had a seizure in two years. Multiple, not just one,” said Tracy Fischer, owner of Hometown Hemp. “It helps tremendously, but there are so many people who need more, and we can’t legally provide that for them.”

People in the community said that with the passage of this ordinance, people would no longer have access to a resource that can impact lives.

Even with the adoption of the regulation, nothing is set in stone.

The City of London will vote in November this year on whether or not to allow the sale of medicinal cannabis.

Mayor Randall Weddle believes this is a missed opportunity for Laurel County’s economic growth.

“I constantly watch and work with our economic development, which is doing a great job here,” Weddle said. “This puts them in a bad position because they’re trying to create good-paying jobs that families can make a living from.”

Mayor Weddle said he is working on organizing events to further educate people in Laurel County about medical cannabis.
