County and city authorities plan to crack down on unlicensed hot dog vendors near Providence Park this weekend

Multnomah County officials warned Thursday about a new business they say is violating city, county and state regulations: hot dog stands outside Providence Park and the Moda Center.

“Since the summer of 2023, the Health Department has been responding to an increase in unlicensed, improvised red hand carts throughout the city selling hot dogs near venues and bars, often located on sidewalks or in the middle of closed streets,” the county wrote. “Many of the vendors on these carts have been verified to be transported to Portland from other areas.”

And it seems that the district is internally planning a tough crackdown on the handcarts this weekend.

In an Aug. 13 email, Jeff Martin, acting director of the county’s environmental health department, wrote to department staff that the city and county plan to flood the Moda Center and Providence Park with city, state and county agencies to shut down the hot dog vendors.

Agencies in attendance, Martin wrote, include the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission, the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, the Portland Bureau of Transportation, the Portland Fire Marshall and the Multnomah County Health Department, which is responsible for regulating restaurants and food outlets.

He wrote that authorities were being “assisted by law enforcement,” but did not provide any details on what the police presence would look like this weekend.

Martin wrote that the vendors dump grease on the street, sell alcohol without a permit and sometimes to minors, operate without proper sanitation, use propane gas and block sidewalks.

The Foo Fighters perform at Providence Park on Friday and Saturday nights. Mexican artist Peso Pluma plays at the Moda Center on Saturday.
