ONEONTA – The Cornerstone Christian Chargers started the season with another convincing performance from both teams, winning 62-14 away against the Lighthouse Home School Warriors on August 23rd.

Cornerstone started the game with an early touchdown, but Lighthouse answered just past the halfway point of the first quarter with a 1-yard punch-in touchdown run to tie the game at 8-8.

Less than a minute later, the Chargers also scored on the ground: They scored a rushing touchdown and the subsequent two-point attempt and took a 16-8 lead that they would not give up.

From there, Cornerstone continued to score points in the first quarter. Zeke Adams threw an 80-yard pass to Noah Schober for a touchdown and ran the conversion point for a 24-8 lead.

The Chargers defense then came up with two pick-sixes, with Adams scoring the second, extending the lead by another 12 points and ending the opening period with a convincing 36-8 lead.

Lighthouse then tried the running game and was rewarded with a 58-yard touchdown. Cornerstone prevented the two-point conversion and the score was 36-14.

Adams then scored the final touchdown of the half with a 43-yard run and the Chargers went into halftime with a 42-14 lead.

Cornerstone was not satisfied with its large lead and extended it just one minute into the third quarter.

Drake Dunning scored a rushing touchdown from 10 yards out and the two-point attempt brought the score to 50-14.

This ended the Chargers’ offense, but the defense was able to make a few decisive impacts with two more touchdowns.

Midway through the third quarter, Adams made another interception and returned it 65 yards, giving him six more points and a 56-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Then, in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Cornerstone pulled off an even better interception return. This time, the Chargers returned the ball 92 yards to score and add the final six points to their 62-14 victory in the season opener.

With its only non-regional game behind them, Cornerstone will look to maintain its now 12-game winning streak in 8-team play as it enters AISA Class A play.

Cornerstone travels to North River Christian to face the Chargers on Friday, August 30th at 7 p.m. to open regional play.
