Company offers sustainable end-of-life solutions

GREENCASTLE — Biodegradable coffins for humans and pets are offered at Setas Eternal Living. This service includes a product called MyCoffin, which is designed to biodegrade human bodies in less than three years and those of pets in less than two years. This initiative aims to honor life while promoting environmental protection, Setas officials said.

Setas Eternal Living is a subsidiary of Setas Mushrooms, LLC. The coffins are made from mycelium, the vegetative part of a mushroom. These mycelium-based products are designed to naturally decompose, returning nutrients to the soil and allowing new life to emerge. Unlike traditional coffins, which can take decades to decompose and often contain environmentally harmful materials, MyCoffin fully decomposes in just a few years, making it a zero-waste solution, company officials said.

Dr. Max Justice, Founder and CEO of Setas Eternal Living, emphasizes the importance of sustainability in their mission. “MyCoffin is more than a product; it is a commitment to making a positive impact on the planet. We want to change the way we think about burials and incorporate eco-friendly practices that benefit both the environment and future generations.”

The manufacturing process of MyCoffin begins with a carefully prepared substrate of hemp and reishi mushroom. This mixture is placed into molds and populated with mycelium, which holds the materials together as it grows. After a few weeks, the structure is fully formed and is then dried and fossilized, ready to serve its purpose. This use of mycelium not only ensures rapid biodegradability, but also enriches the soil, supports new plant growth and provides assurance of environmental impact as a carbon-negative solution, company representatives said.

Setas Eternal Living’s products are designed for customization and allow families to be deeply involved in the process of personalizing caskets to reflect the unique personality and values of their loved ones, the company said in a press release.

According to industry forecasts, the U.S. casket and casket manufacturing industry is turning to more environmentally friendly alternatives, Setas officials said.
