Community mourns beloved educator killed in Fresno County accident

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — In Fresno County, the small community of Five Points mourns the loss of a local leader.

On Saturday night, 69-year-old Baldomero Solorio-Hernandez was fatally struck by another car as he crossed 10th Avenue to get to his truck.

His two daughters, Amber Long and Courtney Gonzalez, are devastated by the loss of their father.

“The man was just magic in human form,” Amber said as she emotionally described her father.

“He was our rock. He was a pillar of the community. He was Superman and could do anything. He would have given you the shirt off his back,” added Courtney, Amber’s sister.

Baldo was principal and superintendent of Westside Elementary School in Five Points.

That’s where he grew up and where he and his children went to school.

His daughters describe Baldo, called Mister, as someone who loved music and was always helpful.

“I can’t remember our house ever being empty. The doors are always open, no matter what day or what time and no matter what you need. You need food and clothes. Whatever you need,” Amber said.

Baldo was an avid watch collector and left behind dozens.

He was always ready for a trip to Disneyland.

“He was like a really, really big kid when we were there. We were there in June and even at 69 he was still like a huge kid… All the worries he had on his shoulders just disappeared,” said his wife, Robin Hernandez, to whom he has been married for 49 years, and recounts her fondest memory of the park.

The story behind this Snow White witch puppet: “This witch had a special offer sign on it and I said, ‘Man, I really liked that…’ He said, ‘I’ll buy it from you. I think it cost $600 at the time, that was a lot of money,'” Robin recalled.

“We had it in a box and then suddenly a call came. She said: ‘I shouldn’t actually sell it to you.’ Because it was supposed to go to a Disney museum at the time,” Robin remembers.

This summer, the family returned home with a piece of Disney history and a beautiful memory that makes them laugh even in the most difficult times.

Baldo advocated for people in the community who needed help finding housing or acquiring citizenship. Robin plans to continue this movement. She says, “He wanted everyone in the community to be treated fairly and he insisted that they know their rights.”

Baldo leaves behind two daughters, two sons and four grandchildren.

He will be remembered for the change he made in his community and family, and for his passion for helping others.
