Combined Basalt High golf team starts season well – The Sopris Sun

Among the first local high school fall sports teams to enter action this season is the Basalt High School (BHS) combined boys golf team, which has already competed in four events and established itself as one of the top Class 3A teams on the Western Slope.

The Longhorns’ top three players, senior Jackson Stewart and sophomores Griffin Didier and Hudson Arnold, all hail from Carbondale. The combined district team is hosted by BHS but draws students from the Roaring Fork, Basalt and Glenwood Springs high school catchment areas.

The team is coached by Travis Stewart, Jackson’s father.

The Longhorn Invitational on August 13 brought 10 teams to River Valley Ranch Golf Course in Carbondale, where Jackson Stewart outshot Aspen junior Leo Roennau to win with an 18-hole round of 69. Roennau shot 70 to finish second, and Didier was 4 shots back with a 74 to tie for third. Arnold finished eighth with a 76.

Basalt won the team competition with a combined low score (three scoring players) of 219. Aspen finished second with 228 and Fruita Monument finished third with 229.

Playing at the Tiger Invitational at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction on Monday, August 19, Didier scored the fewest points for his team, finishing fourth overall with 71 points, while Stewart finished fifth with 73 points and Arnold finished 14th with 79 points.

Grand Junction High won the team competition with a total score of 206, Basalt took second place with 223 and Aspen took third place with 230.

The team was back in action on Wednesday at the Battle of the Glen at Aspen Golf Club.

The combined BHS girls softball team also made waves last week after losing a non-league home game to Durango 21-1 on Saturday. The Longhorns were back in action on Tuesday, at home against Grand Junction, and were in Aspen on Thursday.

The combined Basalt cross country team will host its first meet of the season, the Longhorn Invitational, at Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel on Saturday morning, August 24.
