ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – A judicial emergency for Cobb County Superior Court has been extended for another month.

The judicial emergency was originally scheduled to end on September 6, but was then extended until October 6. Chief Judge Gregory Poole declared the emergency in early August because the clerk’s office was suffering from software problems with a new system.

County officials said that while document availability has improved, there is a “significant backlog” and documents are “still not indexed” as far back as November 2023.

The extension will provide enough time to index all overdue documents in the new system, officials said.

Judicial emergencies, according to county officials, are “permitted under Georgia law when the presiding judge determines that an emergency exists so serious that the judicial system cannot function normally and, in many cases, the public will not be able to use the judicial system or meet the deadlines imposed on them by the court.”
