CLEVELAND – The man suspected of his involvement in a Cleveland murder who was arrested in South Carolina earlier this week has been extradited to Rowan County to face trial.

According to a statement from Police Chief Jon Jessop, officers from the Cleveland Police Department were able to extradite 39-year-old Stephen Eric Buchanan of Mooresville to Rowan County on Friday.

Buchanan was brought before a judge upon his arrival. In North Carolina, Buchanan was charged with seven new criminal charges and four probation violations.

The new charges include murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, theft by a felon, obtaining property by false pretenses and violation of probation.

According to Jessop’s testimony, Buchanan was denied bail on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Bail was set at $80,000 for the remaining charges, including grand theft, obtaining property by false pretenses and probation violations.

Buchanan was transferred to the custody of the Rowan County Detention Center, where he awaits trial.

background

Authorities in Cleveland confirmed Wednesday that a murder investigation is underway. The suspect, Buchanan, was arrested in York County, South Carolina, in the afternoon and booked into the local detention center at 6:46 p.m.

In a statement, Jessop confirmed that Cleveland police, working with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, determined the murder occurred at a residence on Johnstone Road.

According to a statement earlier this week, the incident occurred on Monday.

“We would like to reassure the public that the situation is under control and there is no ongoing threat to public safety,” officials said at the time. “Our officers responded promptly and took the necessary actions to secure the area. We are actively investigating the incident to determine the facts and ensure appropriate action is taken.”

On Monday, Jessop said: “Our greatest concern is the safety and well-being of our community members. We understand that incidents such as this can be a cause for concern and we want to assure everyone that we are taking this matter seriously. Our officers are working diligently to gather all relevant information.”

The ongoing investigation led to the development of sufficient suspicion and the issuance of an arrest warrant against Buchanan.
