Cleveland Browns: Former RB John Kelly Jr. finds new home with the Baltimore Ravens

The Cleveland Browns made numerous changes to their roster on Monday in preparation for joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings this week ahead of their preseason game on Saturday afternoon.

Among the measures was the team’s decision to terminate the contract of running back John Kelly Jr., whose attempt to secure a spot on the roster took a negative turn after he lost a fumble in the season opener against the Green Bay Packers.

However, Kelly did not have to wait long for a call from another team as he signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

The move is due in part to the Ravens needing another running back in training camp, as rookie Rasheen Ali has been unable to practice since sustaining an injury in Baltimore’s season-opening game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kelly, a six-year veteran, spent the last three seasons with the Browns, primarily as a member of the practice squad. While he appeared in five games with Cleveland, his last run in a regular-season game came in 2021, when he rushed twice for 13 yards in a 17-14 win over the Denver Broncos.

Kelly spent his first two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams after being selected in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Overall, he appeared in 13 games and scored 32 carries for 96 yards while adding two pass catches for 27 yards.

The Browns had today off and will continue their training camp with joint practices against the Vikings on Wednesday and Thursday at 2:10 p.m. at the team’s facility in Berea. Quarterback Deshaun Watson will “do the majority of the drills” during the training sessions, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski, but will not play in the actual game.

The two teams will face each other in a warm-up game on Saturday at 4:25 p.m. at Cleveland Browns Stadium in downtown Cleveland.
