Ciara Kelly: Are US voters bored of Trump, the “flash in the pan”?

US voters are “bored” of Donald Trump and his “semi-ridiculous” jabs at Kamala Harris, claims Ciara Kelly.

The Newstalk Breakfast The moderator spoke after the Democratic Party Convention began on Monday in Chicago.

US President Joe Biden gave up his candidacy to remain in office a month ago after a series of blunders and a disastrous performance in the debate with his Republican rival Donald Trump. Kamala Harris then stepped in as the new candidate.

Ciara said the race changed completely in the weeks that followed.

“We thought there was a US presidential election coming up,” she said. “We thought it would be Trump versus Biden.”

“Biden appeared frail, unsteady on his feet; Biden, frankly, looked very old and possibly unfit.

“Now we have a very different election campaign ahead of us (with) a much younger, more energetic candidate against Trump.

“A lot of what the Democrats are saying seems to be resonating – the felon versus the prosecutor, (the idea that) Trump is ‘anti-democratic,’ after everything that happened on January 6.”

Ciara said that Trump’s question about whether Kamala Harris is a communist or even black is not resonating with voters.

“These kinds of semi-ridiculous jabs at her – are we tired of Trumpisms?” she asked.

“It seems to be getting out of hand”

Moderator Jonathan Healy also asked what the future holds for Trump.

“I wonder if the one-trick pony is done with his trick?” he said.

If you look at the Republican Party Conventionwhich took place a few days after the attempt to shoot him, seems completely insane compared to what happened at the Democratic National Convention.

“Nobody walks around with bandages on their ears; nobody has ever brought a dog on stage.

“What is very worrying for Republicans is the fact that Kamala Harris is ahead of Trump in five of the seven swing states.

“If she stays there, there will be no way for Donald Trump to get into the White House.

“This will freak him out and scare him way more than anything else Joe Biden could have done to him during the campaign.”

Jonathan said Donald Trump himself does not seem to be able to change his approach.

“He only knows one way, which is to attack the individual and be mean – and that’s not working right now,” he said.

“They’re desperately trying to get him to talk about the economy and things that appeal to these red voters.

“He just can’t resist because it has to be about him.”

Jonathan added that he expects Trump to experience “massive fluctuations” between now and November.
