Chris Evans’ cameo with Deadpool and Wolverine sets up an epic Fantastic Four showdown in wild MCU multiverse theory

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Deadpool and Wolverine.

Summary

  • Johnny Storm’s death in
    Deadpool and Wolverine
    could inspire the 2005
    Fantastic Four
Team to form the Future Foundation and travel to the Void, the TVA, and the entire Marvel Multiverse.
  • Johnny Storm mentioned that Reed explained the Void to him, suggesting that his version of the Fantastic Four already has multiversal knowledge.
  • Similar to the comics, the MCU’s Future Foundation could oppose the Council of Reeds and later help restore and streamline the multiverse.

Chris Evans’ surprise appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine could be the first hint of a major MCU conflict involving the Fantastic Four. Part of the appeal of Deadpool and WolverineThe multiversal premise of “The 4000” is the familiar cameos, plot points and references to other Marvel films. Deadpool and WolverineThe Easter Eggs allude to MCU titles such as Iron-Man, Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessAnd Moon Knightas well as non-MCU titles such as Daredevil, bladeand the whole X-Men film franchises, to name a few.

Also, Deadpool and WolverineCameos and supporting characters integrate other franchises and previously unknown universes into the MCU. Two of the most surprising characters in Deadpool and Wolverine are Henry Cavill’s Wolverine “Cavillrine” and Chris Evans’ Human Torch, featured in Tim Story’s 2005 Fantastic FourUnfortunately for Evans’ Johnny Storm, Deadpool had him killed by Cassandra Nova for insulting her, even though Deadpool’s confession about Johnny Storm’s insults was completely accurate, as shown in Deadpool and Wolverine‘s post-credits scene. While Chris Evans’ brief appearance as Johnny Storm is clearly intended as just comic relief, his death could have serious implications for the Multiverse Saga.

Johnny Storm’s death could lay the foundation for the future of the Fantastic Four in 2005

The death of the Human Torch in the comic caused major changes in the history of the Fantastic Four

In the comics, Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch, sacrifices himself to defeat Annihilus’ army. Johnny’s death has a profound impact on the rest of the Fantastic Four, inspiring them to direct their resources and efforts in a different direction. Reed Richards is disappointed with the world’s best scientists and founds the Future Foundation – a scientific organization that brings together young and promising scientists under the leadership of Mister Fantastic. Reed, Sue Storm and Ben Grimm now wear white uniforms and welcome Spider-Man to their new team, as Johnny Storm had wished before his death.

Ioan McGruffud’s Reed Richards, Jessica Alba’s Sue Storm and Michael Chiklis’ Ben Grimm could then form their own version of the Future Foundation and investigate how to travel into the void.

With Chris Evans’ Human Torch removed from his timeline, his teammates may be looking for a way to reach him. Once they reach the Void or learn what happened to Johnny there, the Fantastic Four may want to avenge him. Ioan McGruffud’s Reed Richards, Jessica Alba’s Sue Storm, and Michael Chiklis’ Ben Grimm could then form their own version of the Future Foundation and investigate how to travel to the Void, the TVA, and other timelines like Earth-10005 and Earth-616 that could fall into their crosshairs due to Deadpool’s recklessness.

When Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm explains to Deadpool and Wolverine how the Void works, he mentions that “Reed” explained it to him. This reed is of course probably the same reed that Richards used in 2005 in Fantastic Fourplayed by Ioan Gruffud. Gruffud’s Mister Fantastic barely understood the powers of the Fantastic Four in their debut film, and he did not understand the origins of Galactus and the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer. The fact that Reed was able to explain the Void to Johnny suggests that his knowledge has grown exponentially since the last time fans saw him on screen.

I’m angry at Deadpool and Wolverine for how they handle Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm and his ending

Chris Evans returned to the MCU as Johnny Storm – not Captain America – in Deadpool & Wolverine, and while it was a fun role, I didn’t like some of the key decisions.

Johnny Storm’s mention of Reed Richards in Deadpool and Wolverine is short, but says a lot about Johnny Storm’s universe. The greatest minds of Earth-616 saved their universe after inventing time travel, nanotechnology, and size-shifting. Yet neither Doctor Strange nor Bruce Banner, Shuri, Vision, and Hank Pym know exactly how the multiverse works, let alone what the Void and the TVA are. Only magic-wielding characters like Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff have consciously gained access to other universes, and they have fought for it. In the meantime, Fantastic FourReed Richards has accurately described the void without having to enter it.

How the MCU can adapt the story of the Fantastic Four Foundation

The origin of the Future Foundation in a live-action version could follow a similar sequence of events as in the comics, with Reed, Sue and Ben focusing their efforts on scientific exploration of the multiverse. Much like in the comics, the Future Foundation could also welcome infamous FF villains such as Mad Thinker, Diablo, the Wizard and Doctor Doom himself, as well as Reed Richards and Sue Storm’s children Franklin and Valeria Richards. With such impressive intelligence, Marvel’s alternate universe Future Foundation could depict the Sacred Timeline and the Voidmaking it a force to be reckoned with throughout the multiverse.

The idea that Tim Story’s Fantastic Four will play a major role in Avengers: Endgame And Avengers: Secret Wars may seem far-fetched considering how overlooked the 2000s Fantastic Four Films are compared to Fox’s X-Men Franchise, Sam Raimi’s Spider ManAnd The Amazing Spiderman. The upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps will introduce the Fantastic Four from another universe. The MCU’s multiversal Fantastic Four sets the precedent that variants of the Fantastic Four from across the multiverse can be key players in the pivotal conflicts of the Multiverse Saga.

Marvel’s Council of Reeds is directly inspired by the Council of Kangs, which made its comic book debut 46 years earlier.

In fact, in Marvel Comics, the Future Foundation gathers to fight against the Council of Reeds. Prime Reed Richards understands that while his multiversal variants are brilliant, they lack his moral compass. To stop them before they cause chaos, Prime Reed enlists the help of his former enemies and fights against the Council. In the MCU Fantastic Four‘s Reed Richards could either join or oppose a multiversal council of Reeds, depending on how Johnny Storm’s brutal death in the Void during Deadpool and Wolverine shapes his view of multiversal heroes who interact with individuals from other timelines.
