Chip Kelly, OC of the Ohio State Buckeyes, reveals how he evaluates QBs

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day has officially announced that Will Howard will be the team’s starting quarterback beginning in 2024, which comes as no surprise.

Chip Kelly, Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, was then asked how he and his team evaluate quarterbacks, and he gave a pretty detailed answer.

“I think decision making is at the top of the list for all quarterbacks,” Kelly said. “Are you going to get us in the right game? Are you going to get us out of a bad game? … It’s not just about who has the strongest arm.”

Kelly then went on to say that “competitive precision” and “athleticism” are also important traits he looks for, adding that Howard possesses all of the skills mentioned.

Howard spent the first four seasons of his college career at Kansas State before transferring to Ohio State this year.

In his first full season as starting quarterback in 2023, Howard threw for 2,643 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and completed 61.3 percent of his passes. He also ran for 351 yards and nine touchdowns, showing impressive dual-threat potential.

However, Howard’s overall uninspiring numbers with the Wildcats have given him pause for thought as he prepares for his first season in Columbus. To be fair to Howard, though, Kansas State hasn’t provided him with nearly as much supporting talent as Ohio State will provide him in 2024.

Many believe that the Buckeyes have the best roster in the country and Howard will have numerous weapons.

Ohio State will open its regular season on August 31 against Akron.
