Chiefs get ‘good sign’ on Hollywood Brown’s shoulder injury, says Andy Reid

Chiefs get ‘good sign’ on Hollywood Brown’s shoulder injury, says Andy Reid

Chiefs wide receiver Hollywood Brown, who suffered a shoulder injury on Saturday during the first snap of his team’s season opener at the Jacksonville Jaguars, will not require surgery, KC coach Andy Reid said Monday.

Brown suffered a dislocation of his sternoclavicular shoulder joint during a tackle on Patrick Mahomes’ 11-yard pass. He left the field and went to the locker room before the quarter ended.

Brown spent the night in a hospital in Jacksonville, but returned to Kansas City on Sunday.

“They were able to put the joint back in place without surgery, which is a good sign,” Reid said.

After the game, Reid compared the injury to the injury then-Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill suffered on the same field during the 2019 opener. Hill missed the next four games.

Reid did not give a timetable for Brown’s return, saying after the game, “I think he’s going to be out for some time.”

Brown was not the Chiefs’ first choice on this play. The play was originally intended for rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, but Worthy was covered when Mahomes released the ball.

“They (the Jaguars) kind of took my game away from me, and that upset me,” Worthy said.

Worthy said Brown sounded optimistic in their conversation later Saturday.

“He was in a pretty good mood,” Worthy said. “He’s just excited to get back and get ready to work.”

Several players who did not play or practice on Saturday returned to the field for a workout without protective gear on Monday. Safety Justin Reid, linebacker Nick Bolton and wide receiver Kadarius Toney were able to participate. Reid has been dealing with a quadriceps injury and has not practiced during training camp.

Bolton suffered an elbow injury about two weeks ago and had his left arm bandaged. Toney was out for some time due to back problems.

Among those absent from practice were running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness) and safety Bryan Cook (personal reasons).
