Chicago’s museums offer city visitors free admission on select days throughout the summer, and that’s not all.

Popular sites like the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum and others continue to offer free admission days throughout August.

And remember: Lincoln Park Zoo is always free.

Here is a complete list of free days in August.

Art Institute of Chicago

Illinois residents can visit the Art Institute for free on Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through September 26.

Admission is always free for teachers of grades Illinois Pre-K through 12, school-based teaching artists, children under 14, Chicago teens, and active members.

According to the Art Institute, art lovers can reserve their tickets free of charge.

Adler Planetarium

The Adler Planetarium offers Illinois residents a free museum visit every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Interested parties must reserve tickets in advance.

The museum said admission is always free for Illinois teachers.

Chicago History Museum

The Chicago History Museum is offering residents free admission for one day in August. Visit the museum on August 28th and see all the historical exhibits the museum has to offer.

According to officials, admission to the museum is always free for active Chicago police officers and firefighters, as well as Illinois state teachers, residents under 18, and all children under 12.

DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center

Although advance ticket reservations are always required, the museum offers free admission every Wednesday.

Field Museum

A press release from the museum states that admission to the museum will be free for Illinois residents every Wednesday in 2024.

Proof of residency is required for free entry. Tickets cannot be purchased online, they are only available on site.

Griffin Museum of Science and Industry

Admission is free for Illinois residents on August 19, 20, 26 and 27. A full list of free dates for the coming months can be found here. You can reserve tickets in advance.

Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

Illinois residents can visit the Museum of Contemporary Art for free every Tuesday. Admission to the museum is always free for visitors under 18. The museum also has a “pay what you can” policy.

Shedd Aquarium

Shedd Aquarium offers free admission on August 13, 20, and 27 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There is a $5 processing fee for ticket reservations made online. There is no fee for ticket reservations made by phone.
