Chicago DNC 2024: Major protests planned for Day 1

The Democratic National Convention puts Chicago in the spotlight and protesters are using this opportunity to their advantage.

One of the largest demonstrations expected this week is that of the Coalition to March on the DNC, which is scheduled to begin outside the United Center around noon on Monday.

Before that, the United States Palestinian Community Network will hold a demonstration in the same area near Union Park at 9 a.m. The group will meet at 8 a.m.

The Coalition to March on the DNC consists of over 200 organizations, including the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, the US Palestinian Community Network and the Arab American Action Network.

The coalition demands:

  • USA ends aid to Israel
  • Give the community control over the police
  • Immigrant rights and legalization for all!
  • Defending LGBTQIA+ and reproductive rights
  • Money for jobs, schools, health, housing and the environment, not for war!
  • The right to organize unions and to strike

A legal dispute has been raging for months over the route of the march. According to activists, it is too short for the tens of thousands of participants expected.

The coalition challenged the City of Chicago’s 1.7-kilometer route and demanded that it be extended further west and closer to the United Center, reaching a total length of 3.7 kilometers.
