Chicago court confirms R. Kelly’s conviction for child abuse

R. Kelly’s attempt to reduce his lengthy prison sentence failed on Friday when the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago ruled that his 2022 conviction would be upheld.

Kelly had attempted to appeal the 20-year prison sentence he received in Chicago for child pornography charges, but the court rejected that appeal this week after directly linking the Chicago ruling to the 30-year sentence the singer received in New York for sex trafficking and organized crime.

Court documents obtained by the Daily Beast show that Kelly has appealed his convictions for sexual exploitation and enticement of a child, arguing that the charges were statute-barred, that one of the charges should have been tried by a separate jury and that the 240-month prison sentence was procedurally “inappropriate.”

All of those counts were dismissed on the grounds that the statute of limitations extends over the victims’ entire lives, that the jury was “properly instructed” and “did its duty diligently.” It even acquitted Kelly on seven counts and justified his 240-month sentence by saying it was “within the guidelines.” The court subsequently ruled this week that Kelly’s six convictions would not be overturned and that he would not receive a new sentencing trial.

The disgraced R&B star is still appealing his conviction in New York, claiming that the sensational docuseries Survival of R. Kelly unfairly influenced his trial.

“We are disappointed in the verdict, but our fight is far from over,” Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s defense attorney, told The Daily Beast. “We will seek Supreme Court review and continue to pursue all of his appeals until we release R. Kelly. You bet on that.”
