Cherokee County Meals on Wheels suffers from a critical shortage of volunteers

GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) – Cherokee County Meals on Wheels, an organization dedicated to delivering meals to the elderly, disabled and homebound, is now in desperate need of support from the community.

The organization, which serves about 500 meals a day, is suffering from a shortage of volunteers due to the start of the new school year.

Don Johnson, a dedicated volunteer, spends his mornings delivering food across the county. “I have a regular route on Monday, and Tuesday through Friday I go wherever they send me,” Johnson said.

His job involves more than just delivering food; it’s also about providing companionship and looking after the well-being of the people he visits. “Sometimes we’re the only people they see during the day,” Johnson added.

Meals on Wheels Executive Director Terry Dennis expressed deep concern about the current situation. “We desperately need volunteers – to deliver meals, serve, pack and help in the kitchen,” Dennis said. The shortage puts the organization at risk of having a waiting list for the first time in its 40-year history. “Without volunteers, we cannot deliver the meals, and that is the case today.”

For recipients like Jenni Hamrick, the service is a lifeline.

“It’s great when you can’t walk or get up. I have rheumatoid arthritis and a heart problem, and this helps me a lot,” Hamrick said.

The thought of a waiting list is devastating for many who rely on these daily meals. “If we said we don’t have any space available right now…how devastating would that be for you as a family member and the person who needs the meals today?” asked Dennis.

Cherokee County Meals on Wheels is in desperate need of 30 to 50 new volunteers to continue its vital service. Community members who can help pack, cook, or deliver meals are encouraged to step forward and support this important program.
