Beauty influencer Jools Lebron, who has single-handedly caused the word “sitting” to gain popularity across social media platforms in recent weeks, has posted a candid update on how “TikTok has changed my life.”
The creator, who identifies as a transgender woman, encouraged her followers to post their own TikTok videos. In a post on Wednesday, she said, “One day I was playing cashier and making videos on my break and now I’m flying around different countries hosting events and I’m going to be able to fund the rest of my transition.”
The “modest” trend has swept TikTok, X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms this week, with many attributing its viral spread to a video LeBron posted on August 5 in which he describes how to do makeup for the workplace in a “modest, modest and respectful” manner.
“I don’t come to work with a green cut-crease hairdo,” Lebron says in the video that started the trend. “I don’t look like a clown when I go to work. I don’t do too much, I’m very mindful at work. See how I look very presentable? The way I came to the interview, the way I go to the job. A lot of you girls go to the interview looking like Marge Simpson and go to the job looking like Patty and Selma.”
After the video went viral, Lebron continued to create content for other “divas” explaining how to act “modestly” in other life situations, such as boarding a plane, thanking hotel staff, or straightening hair. Along with the term, the popularity of Lebron’s TikTok videos has exploded. She now has 1.5 million followers and nearly 100 million likes on her videos on the platform. Other creators have joined the trend, labeling anything they can think of as “modest” or “not modest.”
Being “chaste” — more of a mood than a literal interpretation of the word — has now become more of a lifestyle, and some people online are already coining it “Chaste Case” (which is a stark departure from the party vibe of “Brat Summer” inspired by Charli XCX’s album “Brat,” should Brat Summer end and “Chaste Case” live on).
It’s hard to say exactly what “modest” means, but as long as you’re attentive, elegant, and sweet—and don’t wear cut-and-crease makeup to a job interview or to work—you’re probably well on your way to achieving “modest” status.
