Imagine what it’s like to drive through downtown in our area. If you’re like me and many others, images of small businesses, people, and possibly even events come to mind. What do you picture when you think of local events?
You may have images of local celebrations in your head, such as at Christmas or just before, perhaps events with wine, food and live music.
What both concepts have in common is that they can be managed, financed and supported by your local economic development agency and/or chamber of commerce.
I work as an intern at Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corp. and the visualizations and concepts mentioned above are the nature of the work, something not many are familiar with (including me before I came here. I had absolutely no idea what a Chamber of Commerce was).
Working for CCEDC has been a truly eye-opening experience so far, especially because it has changed my perception and understanding of small business.
I learned about advertising and awareness and, perhaps most importantly, how businesses thrive and struggle in many different economic conditions and how to help them do so.
It was also highlighted that the CCEDC work environment has helped me get used to working in a professional environment, one that suits my future, and thus provides me with a valuable first step in the transition from the mundane to substantial professional experience.
Because of these factors and the development of knowledge I have experienced there and the care for small businesses and their owners, I have a positive impression of the CCEDC. In addition, the organization’s positive impact on the community has helped me to increasingly value this work as it connects both new and established entrepreneurs with more clients and engages the community.
I also appreciate the program because it is easily accessible for students like me.
Whether through the Carbon County Employee Summer Employment Program or other means, the experience and ease of access make this one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever had.
