Central Kentucky family tries to rebuild their lives after house fire

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – It was Friday morning when the lives of Kelly Alonzo and her five daughters were turned upside down.

“She had woken up with her older girls. They were getting ready for school, and I guess she had laid back down and was playing with her phone when she started to smell smoke. So her mom woke her up, and by that point the only room was already on fire, and there was smoke all over the house,” said Alonzo’s cousin Krystal Perez.

Alonzo and the rest of her family were able to leave their trailer unharmed, but their house on Alamo Drive in Lexington was a total loss.

Alonzo said firefighters still don’t know what caused the fire.

Perez added that this situation is very difficult for Alonzo and her family.

“She’s going through a lot emotionally,” Perez said. “There are things she’ll never get back. Pictures of her children when they were little. Her oldest daughter is a leukemia survivor, so there are a lot of memories she’ll never get back.”

Perez said the community has made some efforts to meet some of the families’ needs.

“They donated clothes, shoes and school supplies,” Perez said.

Alonzo’s daughter’s school district has paid for a hotel room for her and her five daughters through Thursday, but Perez has set up a GoFundMe page to help with a long-term housing situation.

“We have all these things now, but she doesn’t know where to put them. So I think GoFundMe would be important to make sure they have a roof over their heads and a place to put these things.”

Alonzo said she is eternally grateful to everyone who has already helped.

“It means a lot to me,” Alonzo said.

Perez said donations of goods can be brought to 222 Delaware Drive in Georgetown.

The GoFundMe page can be found here.
