Cats & Dogs – The Revenge of Kitty Galore

Cats & Dogs – The Revenge of Kitty Galore

This hyper-childish film has the best opening credits currently available: a terrific parody of James Bond-esque film montages with lots of cat silhouettes and iconic balls of yarn, etc. And there’s a sneaky end credits sequence with YouTube lolcats and dog antics. Between these two high points, unfortunately, lies the rest of the film. An attempt to build a franchise based on the semi-CGI technique of 2001 Cats & DogsThis sequel keeps the basic idea that dogs are actually man’s best friend, and continues a high-tech underground espionage operation aimed primarily at outsmarting megalomaniacal feline supervillains. The main character here, Kitty Galore (voice: Bette Midler), is a hairless cat determined to emit a high-frequency sound wave that will drive dogs everywhere crazy and put them out of favor with their masters. An alliance of canine and feline agents (plus a pesky pigeon) attempt to outsmart Kitty Galore in an attention-deficit plot that has plenty of amusing moments but still suffers from a bad bout of cockiness. We wish there was more ’60s-style 007 satire here (Roger Moore lends his voice) to better align the hyperkinetic comedy with the colorful Austin Powers franchise. As it is, the film is OK family fun, but more shaky than thrilling.
