Carmelo Anthony explains what kept him from an epic Knicks reunion in 2022

Two summers ago, New York Knicks fans thought they would see Carmelo Anthony play for the city again. There were rumors of a reunion, but after weeks of speculation, nothing happened. He did not sign a contract for the 2022-23 season and retired in May 2023.

Melo played for six different teams, but when most people think of him, the first thing that comes to mind is his time in New York. He joined the Knicks in January 2011 and stayed with them through the 2016-17 season. Since retiring, he has attended several games at Madison Square Garden, including the playoffs.

As nice as it would have been for Melo to play for the Knicks again, he let that opportunity pass him by. In his podcast “7PM in Brooklyn” with Kid Mero, he revealed how close he was to signing a contract with New York.

Melo knew he would not re-sign with the Lakers after the 2021-22 season. He said he planned to “finish it out in New York.” He added that the “energy” and “talks” with the Knicks are there and he believes a reunion will happen.

He was told he had a spot on the roster, but he declined. Why? Melo said he didn’t want to go through “not knowing when you’re going to play and when you’re not going to play.” He said he didn’t want fans to remember that role when they think of Melo and New York. The Knicks signed Taj Gibson instead, a move Melo praised.

Melo believes there was some “hesitation” in offering him the role because of the response from New York. He didn’t want to be a distraction.

As a fan, you’re probably disappointed that Melo could have been a Knick again but chose not to. However, after hearing his side of things, it makes sense. He didn’t think it was right for him. It would have been fun to see him in a Knicks jersey again, but it wouldn’t have been the same. At least he’s still coming to The Garden.
