Cardinals trio named to MLB Pipeline’s updated top 100 list

Cardinals trio named to MLB Pipeline’s updated top 100 list

The St. Louis Cardinals may not have the strongest farm system, but that doesn’t mean the organization’s future is completely hopeless.

Regardless of what the ratings say about the Cardinals’ arsenal of promising talent, the organization still has plenty of talent to look forward to.

For example, the potential of a trio of minor league players from the Cardinals has been recognized and it may not be long before they dominate for St. Louis.

Cardinals second baseman JJ Wetherholt (No. 19), right-handed pitcher Tink Therefore (No. 51) and left-handed pitcher Quinn Matthews (No. 86) were recently named to MLB Pipeline’s updated Top 100 list of young players.

Wetherholt is the Cardinals’ 2024 first-round draft pick, and his hitting potential is what makes him special. The young slugger was arguably the best pure hitter in his draft class, and his development should be fun to watch.

In his final season before entering the draft, the 21-year-old had a batting average of .331 with 16 extra-base hits, including eight home runs, 30 RBIs and an OPS of 1.061 in 36 games for the University of West Virginia Mountaineers.

Therefore, it’s a rising star who has the potential to be a front-end starter if he stays healthy. Since being drafted by the Cardinals in 2020, the young pitcher has made steady progress and it might not be long before St. Louis gives him a chance at the showcase.

The 22-year-old has posted a record of 4-3 with a 3.02 ERA, an 86-to-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .210 batting average against and a 1.09 WHIP in 62 2/3 innings pitched for Double-A Springfield this season.

Matthews is a promising pitcher who has quietly emerged as one of the most dominant pitchers in all of minor league baseball this season. He is currently the minor league strikeout leader with 157 strikeouts – and that’s in his first season as a professional pitcher.

The left-hander has compiled a record of 7-3 with a 2.49 ERA, a 157-to-34 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .168 batting average against and a 0.89 WHIP in 112 innings pitched for Single-A Palm Beach, High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield this season.

Even though the Cardinals are currently struggling, there is at least hope for the future with the young talent coming up from the farm system.
