Currently, Illinois coach Bret Bielema is busy preparing his fourth team for the season. Illinois opens on August 29 against Eastern Illinois.

But Bielema has paid attention to another group of players, namely former Illini trying to make it to the NFL.

The number of professional players has increased during Bielema’s tenure at the school. And he wants that number to continue to grow.

“I think the best teachers for our kids are the guys in the NFL,” Bielema said.

Three former Illini play for the Washington Commanders: offensive lineman Nick Allegretti, defensive back Quan Martin and defensive lineman Johnny Newton. On Saturday they played against the Jets and former Illini Tony Adams. A photo was taken of the four of them together.

The photo was soon posted on Bielema’s X-account.

“Anything we can learn from,” Bielema said. “These guys have walked the walk with the other guys. I know some of these guys (the current Illini) are literally in contact with (Devon Witherspoon) on a daily basis. All of that does wonders for us.”

On Thursday, rookie receiver Isaiah Williams had his team’s best performance with four catches in Detroit’s warmup game against the Giants.

“I actually showed our guys these clips (Saturday) morning,” Bielema said.
