Calls for change after second fatal crash in days at a Fresno County intersection

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Two fatal accidents at a Fresno County intersection within just eight days have prompted neighbors to demand change.

The accidents killed 25-year-old Kaiden Bailey and 16-year-old Sandro Lazo, leaving their families devastated.

Joseph Benton lives just steps from where a 16-year-old was struck and killed while riding his bike on the corner of Fowler Avenue and Perrin Road on Thursday evening.

“Now a family has to live the rest of their lives without their son,” Benton said.

He and his wife rushed over when they saw a damaged truck and a crowd of people.

“When we arrived at the scene, he was unconscious. My wife knelt down and prayed for him,” Benton recalled.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Lazo was riding his bicycle along Perrin Street around 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

They say he turned south on Fowler on his bicycle and struck a Dodge Ram truck.

The truck had no stop sign and hit the teenager.

Lazo’s sudden death occurred just days before he was scheduled to begin his penultimate year at Buchanan High School.

Clovis Unified released a statement that read in part:

“Our hearts are heavy as we learn of the unexpected loss today… A mental health team will be available to support students as they return to school.”

The accident occurred just days after another fatal crash at the same intersection that killed Bailey.

Dressed in white and holding white balloons, friends and family gathered at Todd Beamer Park to remember the 25-year-old.

For those who knew Bailey, the park is a place full of fond memories.

His mother says he spent hours skating there when he came to the United States from Australia at the age of 12.

According to the CHP, Bailey was struck and killed around 11:30 p.m. on July 31 while standing next to a stopped car on Fowler Avenue.

Bailey’s mother said her son has family and friends in two countries who are devastated by his loss, quoting:

“The happiness and love he spread will be remembered for the rest of our lives. The pain of losing him will also be there forever.”

In the same statement, she called for changes on Fowler Street and requested a reduction in the speed limit.

Benton also wants cars to slow down in front of his house and put a stop sign at the Fowler at Perrin intersection so he doesn’t have to lose more lives so close to his home.

“I think these rural areas need a lot more stop signs and a lot more police presence,” Bento said.

Both accidents are still under investigation, but neither is believed to have involved drunk driving.

Action News reached out to County Supervisor Nathan Magsig because this intersection is in his district.

He says he is aware of concerns in the region but was not available for an interview Friday evening.

Bailey’s funeral will be held on Friday, August 16th at 3 p.m.
