Byron Buxton is still suffering from his illness, but the MRI is unremarkable

The Minnesota Twins got some good news on Tuesday when Byron Buxton’s MRI scan showed no abnormalities after he left Monday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals due to right hip pain. However, it remains unclear if Buxton will miss the game. He is currently listed on a day-to-day basis.

Buxton is again not in the squad for Wednesday’s series finale against the Royals.

“Actually, there was some good news in the MRI. But symptomatically, I would say he’s doing better,” said Twins manager Rocco Baldelli.

It is not yet clear if Buxton will be able to return to the team anytime soon and avoid a stint on the injured list. Either seems possible, and the course of action will depend on how Buxton feels over the next few days.

“We want to do the best for him and the team, not just this week or the next three, four or five days. We really need to see how he’s doing and make final decisions on whether we’re going to put him back on the field soon or if he’s going to be out for a while. I wouldn’t say long, but for a while,” Baldelli said.

Ideally, the Twins would get through this short period without a stint on the injured list. Buxton has been particularly good lately and has a .275 batting average, .334 on-base percentage, .528 slugging percentage and an .862 OPS this season. He has hit 16 home runs and 49 RBIs.

In the final game of the series on Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians – the game before his retirement – Buxton hit two home runs, sparking a comeback by the Twins that ended in a narrow 5-3 loss.

The Twins and Royals meet in their series finale on Wednesday at 12:10 p.m.
