Burger hits a home run for the third game in a row, the Marlins win 7-6 and end the Padres’ seven-game winning streak

MIAMI– Jake Burger hit a home run for the third straight game, Jesús Sánchez also hit a home run and the Miami Marlins beat San Diego 7-6 on Sunday, ending the Padres’ seven-game winning streak.

Burger has hit 12 home runs since the All-Star break.

Ha-Seong Kim was originally credited with a tying home run against Andrew Nardi when his hit bounced off the padding in left field and then deflected over the wall with two outs in the ninth inning. However, after an umpire’s review, the ruling was reversed to a double.

George Soriano relieved Nardi and struck out Luis Campuzano for his first save.

Marlins starter Max Meyer (3-2) allowed three runs and seven hits and struck out four players in a career-best 6 1/3 innings. Meyer was replaced after David Peralta’s double cut San Diego to 5-4.

Sánchez’s two-run drive against reliever Yuki Matsui in the seventh inning extended Miami’s lead before San Diego narrowed the deficit in the eighth inning with a two-run drive by pinch-hitter Donovan Solano against Nardi.

Luis Arraez had three hits for the Padres. He hit 7 of 15 in the series against his former club.

The Marlins scored five runs in the first two innings against Padres starter Dylan Cease (11-9) before the right-hander settled down and held them scoreless over the final three innings of his outing. Three of the runs attributed to Cease were unearned after two Padres errors in the second inning. Cease allowed six hits, struck out five times and allowed two walks.

Two run-scoring singles by Jonah Bride and Otto López in the first inning gave Miami a 2-0 lead.

Burger’s two-run drive capped a three-run second. Xavier Edwards reached base when Arraez dropped shortstop Kim’s throw to first base, which also allowed Derek Hill to score from third base before Burger

The Padres began to reduce the deficit with RBI groundouts by Peralta in the fifth and Jurickson Prufar and Jake Cronenworth in the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, both benches were cleared after Miami second baseman Otto López objected to Cronenworth’s hard slide onto the bases to prevent a double play, but no hits were called.

Before the game, the Padres sent right-handed pitcher Jhony Brito to Triple-A El Paso and recalled right-hander Sean Reynolds from the same minor league club.
