BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) – As the final weekend of summer vacation draws to a close, students in Broward County are preparing to return to school on Monday, where they can expect some changes both inside and outside the classroom.

One of the most important changes this year is the introduction of metal detectors in all secondary schools in the district. Students must pass through these detectors before entering their classrooms.

While most items with low metal density, such as iPhones and keys, will not trigger the alarm, other objects, such as glasses cases, may.

Student representatives reported that the metal detectors were largely welcomed by their fellow students as a necessary measure to increase security on campus.

“Most of the feedback said that it really makes students feel more comfortable in their learning environment and also limits the distractions caused by the weapons present on campus,” said a student representative.

In addition to metal detectors, some schools will install a single entry point, while others will have multiple entrances with new security features. School leaders stress the importance of parents helping their children adjust to these new procedures to minimize delays during the first few weeks of school.

“We need the help of parents too. Parents, I’m a parent too. Sometimes you have to go through the backpack just to make sure the kids aren’t bringing things to school that they shouldn’t have,” said Dr. Howard Hepburn, superintendent of Broward County Public Schools. “They need to be prepared to learn. Leave all the other stuff at home.”

Meanwhile, 1,200 school buses are ready to hit the road Monday, completing over 700 routes. This year, the fleet includes 60 new electric buses, a significant improvement in the district’s commitment to sustainability. Despite this progress, officials are urging both students and parents to practice their routes to ensure a smooth start to the school year.

In the classroom, the district is expanding its popular programs in coding, science and culinary arts, underscoring its commitment to providing diverse educational opportunities. But one rule remains the same: Students of all ages must turn off their cell phones or put them in airplane mode during school hours.

As preparations come to a close, staff and administration can’t wait to welcome the new class after spending the week preparing for students to return to school.
