Broome County Humane Society’s duck race raises over ,000

ENDWELL (WBNG) — The Broome County Humane Society’s 14th annual duck race took place in Highland Park and caused a stir as 15,000 rubber ducks zoomed down a slide to raise funds for the nonprofit organization.

The Broome County Humane Society hosts the duck race every year to raise money. This year’s goal was to adopt all 15,000 ducks.

“We’ve raised over $60,000 total,” said John Tokos, a volunteer on the board of directors of the Broome County Humane Society. “It will be interesting to see what we bring in, but we’re sold out.”

The top three ducks in the derby won cash prizes, with the first place duck winning $5,000.

All funds raised at the event will benefit the Broome County Humane Society, an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and finding homes for animals in need.

“This community is wonderful,” said volunteer Janet Oliver. “They do so much. When we ask for donations, the community comes. They really do great work.”

While the Humane Society primarily helps dogs and cats, it has also cared for a variety of other animals over the years.

“We had pigs, horses, llamas, rabbits and even rats,” Tokos said. “You never know what to expect.”

The Broome County Humane Society’s next event is the Claws and Paws golf tournament on September 8. Donations are accepted anytime through the organization’s website.
