Brockton Public Schools mourns 10-year-old killed in car crash in Plainville

BROCKTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Brockton Public Schools mourns the loss of a rising fifth-grader from Downey School.

In a Facebook post, Brockton schools wrote that it had been challenging to “find words to describe the sense of loss this tragedy has brought.”

On Saturday, 10-year-old Jaylen died in a car crash that injured his siblings, who also attend the Brockton school, and his parents, including his mother, who works as a teacher’s aide at the Barrett Russell Early Childhood Center.

Michael Escolas, 42, is accused of stealing a car from the Kenny Chesney concert and driving it into the back of the car carrying Jaylen’s family.

Escolas is charged with involuntary manslaughter and faces a number of other charges.

The post goes on to say that members of the district leadership team are in regular contact with Jaylen’s family and “will continue to support them closely and offer any assistance available as they mourn this tragic loss.”

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and all their loved ones in their grief,” the post said.

The post goes on to say that members of the school community who feel particularly impacted by this loss are encouraged to visit Downey School today to speak with adjustment counselors and receive supportive resources.
