Brian Kelly has the LSU Tigers complete a “Mindset Day” during preseason training

Brian Kelly has the LSU Tigers complete a “Mindset Day” during preseason training

BATON ROUGE – LSU is in the midst of the toughest stretch of its training camp as the Tigers completed the third of six consecutive days of practice at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly used Wednesday’s practice as an opportunity to challenge his team mentally as the 12th-ranked Tigers continue to prepare for their season-opening game against 23rd-ranked USC on Sept. 1 in Las Vegas.

Battling scorching heat and humidity, LSU used the last three practices to work on goal-line situations, focusing on developing a good mindset on both sides of the ball in that area of the field.

“Today we tried to put our guys in stressful situations on both offense and defense and overcome them with the right balance of emotional control, execution and smart decisions,” Kelly said.

“Offensively, we need to be much more efficient and balanced. Defensively, we need to improve a lot from last year. More importantly, we need to win close games. We need to be mentally strong towards the end of games and have the mindset that when things get tough, we can come out on top and win, especially on the road.”

“That was the day we had today. It was a day of adjustment. I was happy with a lot of things, but today was a day of growth for our football team.”

LSU will finish the week with three consecutive practices. The Tigers will use Sunday as a rest day before returning to practice on Monday.

Kelly said he wants to use the final three practices of the week to see which players can “stack” days as the Tigers move ever closer to game week preparation.

“We’re approaching moving day, like golf,” Kelly said. “These guys have to understand that in the next few days we need to see who the guys are that can put days together. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are kind of like moving days for us, we need to see the guys that can put days together.”
