Brian Kelly explains how DJ Chester earned a spot in the OL starting lineup in the season opener against USC

USC vs. LSU Preview and Prediction | JD PicKell

LSU is confident that their offensive lines can be among the best in college football and has their first test of the season against USC. Most of the stars are on the outside, with Will Campbell And Emery Jones Filling the tackle positions. Brian Kelly some work had to be done inside, especially in the middle with DJ Chester.

Chester, a second-year player, has earned the starting spot and will soon be back in Garrett Nussmeier. Kelly knows the center position has to be one of the more consistent positions on the field, something Chester developed during the latter stages of fall camp.

“I think he’s gone through those stages of natural development,” Kelly said during the SEC Coaches Teleconference on Wednesday. “He’s not ready to go to the NFL yet, and he’s not on the first team All-SEC, he’s got to play. I think what DJ has done a lot better the last few weeks is handle the consistency factor. The ability to come back and string days together.”

“I thought he had a few good days at the beginning of camp, and then he had a few days where you were like, ‘Hmm.’ It was kind of puzzling. And we can’t have that at this position. You have to play the center position really consistently 72, 75 times.”

Kelly would not simply blame anyone USC. So much ridicule the defense of the Trojans suffered Lincoln RileyThere are still some stars in the defense line. Bear Alexander was the name Kelly mentioned as she believed Chester had a nice challenge ahead of him.

“I think he’s really understood that from a maturity perspective and he’s settled in well over the last few weeks with really consistent play. And so he’s going to be going up against a very, very good defensive line for us and particularly a big guy in Bear Alexander who’s probably going to be on the nose quite a bit. So that’s a big challenge for a young guy, but we think he’s up to it.”

Kickoff in Las Vegas is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and 4:30 p.m. PT. Chester will have one of the toughest tasks at the line of scrimmage, but Kelly is confident the work of the last few weeks will pay off when the lights are brightest.
