Brewers LHP starts after activation from 60-day IL

Brewers LHP starts after activation from 60-day IL

The Brewers have activated left-hander DL Hall from the 60-day injured list, The team announced. In two further steps, the club placed left-hander Hoby Milner on the 15-day IL and replaced right-hander Enoli Paredes on the 60-day IL. Hall will start for Milwaukee on Sunday as the Brewers look to secure a series win over the Reds (per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com).

Hall, 25, joined the Brewers last season as part of the trade return for Corbin Burnes. While he pitched primarily out of the bullpen during brief stints with Baltimore in 2022 and 2023, he returned to a full-time starter role with Milwaukee. Unfortunately, he landed on the IL with a left knee sprain after just four starts of his season, and setbacks have benched him since then. If he rejoins the Brewers’ rotation, he will look to improve on his 7.71 ERA and 5.49 SIERA this year over 16.1 innings. It remains unclear how manager Pat Murphy plans to shape his rotation going forward. He has had to deal with injuries to his starting pitchers all season, but now the skipper has six capable pitchers: Freddy Peralta, Frankie Montas, Colin Rea, Tobias Myers, Aaron Civale and Hall.

The 33-year-old Milner has pitched well for the Brewers this season. He is the team’s second-best player in relief innings, and his underlying numbers (3.26 SIERA, 3.27 xERA) are much better than his 4.92 ERA. The left-hander has been particularly dominant against left-handed batters (23:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio), but he has also pitched well against opponents with the other hand, as he has throughout his tenure in Milwaukee. In his four years with the Brewers, Milner has a 2.72 FIP against lefties and a 4.02 FIP against righties. His injury, described as left shoulder impingement, is not particularly unusual or concerning (according to McCalvy), but will be out of action until at least August 24.

Paredes, meanwhile, posted solid results (1.08 ERA) in 14 games with Milwaukee after the team negotiated his contract in late May. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old landed on the injured list in early July with tendinitis in his right forearm. He will be eligible to play again on September 1, but it’s unclear if his injury will keep him out of action for significantly longer. The Brewers haven’t released many details on his status, but when he goes on the 60-day IL with forearm problems, it’s often a bad sign.

In other Brewers news, McCalvy reports that reliever Bryan Hudson is back in Milwaukee and should be activated soon. He has been on the IL since late July with an oblique abdominal muscle injury. The 27-year-old left-hander has a 1.60 ERA and a 2.98 SIERA in 50 2/3 innings this season. Trevor Megill, another key player in the Brewers’ bullpen, will hold live batting practice on Monday and, if all goes well, begin rehab afterward. Megill has a 2.41 ERA and a 2.93 SIERA this season. Like Hudson, he has been on the IL since late July as he recovers from a back strain.
