Brendan Fraser says his strict ‘George of the Jungle’ diet caused temporary memory loss

Brendan Fraser can have taken on a bit too much for his leading role in the 1997 film George of the JungleDuring a recent interview with Adam Sandler for diversityIn his television series “Actors on Actors,” the actor revealed that he suffered temporary memory loss due to the strict dietary restrictions he had to follow to prepare for the role.

“I was waxed, greased and had no carbohydrate needs,” Fraser said. “I was driving home from work and stopped to eat something. One day I needed cash and went to the ATM. I couldn’t remember my PIN number because my brain wasn’t working properly. I pounded on the thing. I didn’t eat anything that night.”

The film, which featured Fraser shirtless and oiled up for virtually the entire runtime, sparked jealousy among some viewers, even as it took its toll on his own health. “You shouldn’t have done that to us,” Sandler joked. “You did the right thing by the character. But you did the wrong thing by us, man. You made us feel bad.”

Fraser had previously revealed that he had sustained several injuries over the years while performing stunts on film sets. “I think I probably pushed myself too hard, in a destructive way,” he said in a 2018 interview with GQAt the time, he said he had been in and out of hospital for nearly seven years of treatment, which included back surgery, a partial knee replacement, vocal cord repairs and having compressed back pads screwed together.
