Breaking News: 16-year-old Quincy Wilson will lead the US team’s 4x400m heats

He received the call.

On Thursday morning, Quincy Wilson became the youngest Olympian on the U.S. men’s track and field team when he was selected to lead the American 4x400m heats on Friday, Chris Chavez reported.

The news comes after Wilson was not selected for the USA mixed 4x400m team. The move initially seemed to make sense as the Americans broke the world record for the event in the heats without Wilson, but Wilson’s rejection was criticized after the Americans had to settle for silver in the final.

The team is considered the favorite for the Olympic gold medal. Team USA will likely include Olympic champions Quincy room also surprised with a late advance last night and won the 400-meter individual final.

Wilson finished sixth in the 400m at the Olympic qualifying heats, just making it into the top six category that is usually selected for the relay. After the trials, he set a personal best of 44.1 seconds, beating Bryce Deadmon at the Holloway Pro Classic in Floriday.

The decision to send Wilson first may have been because the relay coach did not want to take the risk of Wilson receiving a handoff kick without any previous relay experience on the U.S. team.

The first round of the 4x400m will take place Friday morning at 5:05 a.m. EDT. Team USA is permitted to replace one member of the team for the finals on Saturday if the relay coach decides changes are necessary.
