Brave New World raises an important MCU X-Men question

Key findings

  • Captain America: Brave New World introduces adamantium, is connected to the Eternals, and may bring a new Logan.
  • Marvel expands the lore by tying Adamantium to Captain America and future X-Men connections in the MCU.
  • The addition of adamantium in Captain America 4 creates connections to the X-Men and expands the possibilities of the MCU.

Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World will have a lot to offer when it hits theaters in February. The film, which stars Anthony Mackie as Captain America, already brings back characters from Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it will also focus on a new type of metal in the universe that is associated with the X-Men.

This of course raises an interesting question: Captain America: Brave New World has to answer in the film. During the film’s presentation in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con in July, it was announced that the film would introduce adamantium to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This begs the question, has there always been a Logan in the MCU that just wasn’t introduced before?

The meaning of Adamantium in Captain America

Eternals Tiamut Graphics

Adamantium is a nearly indestructible steel alloy, best known as the metal associated with Wolverine’s skeleton and claws. In the comics, it is also the substance used to make Captain America’s shield, and has even led to the creation of Wolverine’s enemy Omega Red, through an attempt to replicate the metal. In Captain America: Brave New WorldThe introduction of Adamantium is expected to result in a continued presence of The Eternals. During an exclusive clip shown during San Diego Comic-Con, Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus Ross talks about the Celestial Tiamut, who has since been transformed into Adamantium. This has naturally led to other nations trying to mine the indestructible metal, which he wants to prevent before it becomes a bigger problem. This is not only related to a question that many fans have been asking ever since. Eternal hit theaters, but it also proves that others are after the material. While Hugh Jackman is currently the main Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks Deadpool and WolverineThe addition of Adamantium to the Marvel Cinematic Universe allows for the introduction of another Logan.

That’s assuming, of course, that there isn’t already another Logan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Or even a potential Weapon X program. Although Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege has previously hinted that the studio has no intention of introducing a new Wolverine anytime soon, that doesn’t mean the Weapon X program or the introduction of a proper Wolverine can’t be hinted at. Captain America: Brave New Worldespecially since the X-Men are expected to finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a few years.

Could there have been a Logan in the MCU?

Does the inclusion of Adamantium mean that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has another Logan hidden? While it is certainly possible, it seems unlikely. The introduction of Vibranium into the Marvel Cinematic Universe came long before Black Panther finally made his debut on the big screen. In fact, Vibranium was first used in Captain America: The First Avengerthanks to Howard Stark. The material was ultimately used in the film to create Captain America’s iconic shield. The addition of Adamantium in Captain America: Brave New World could simply serve as a taste of what is to come, with the material possibly being used to make a new shield for Mackie’s Sam Wilson, or possibly even his wings on his brand new suit. After all, Marvel Studios doesn’t always necessarily stick to the comics to a tee. With Deadpool and Wolverine Now that Jackman’s Wolverine is integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s hard to imagine the studio having any intention of casting a new actor in the role for a while. At least not until Avengers: Secret Warssince the X-Men reboot will apparently take place after the next two Avengers installments.

So if there was no Logan despite the introduction of Adamantium, why was the metal introduced in the fourth? Captain America Movie? It seems likely that the decision was made to remove the Celestials from The Eternalswhile also helping to create more connections to the X-Men in the future. It’s a smart move, if a little surprising, because it helps deepen the lore of the material, much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe did with Vibranium. Making Adamantium important in the future opens up a lot of possibilities, especially if Marvel Studios decides to take inspiration from the comics. With Adamantium being used by not only a Wolverine foe, but also a Daredevil foe, with Bullseye – a character who will return for Daredevil: Reborn.

Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
