Bradenton man kills 81-year-old woman in fatal hit-and-run crash, investigators say

A Bradenton man was arrested after police say he struck and killed an 81-year-old woman with his pickup truck in March.

Manatee County Sheriff’s officials arrested 35-year-old Devan Shaun Carroll on charges of leaving the scene of an accident after investigators say he sped away from the scene of a fatal crash at a Sarasota intersection. According to public records, Carroll received a speeding ticket just hours before the crash.

On February 29, officers with the Sarasota Police Department say they were called to a crash at the intersection of Cocoanut Avenue and Second Street, where Pamela Jean Estinger was struck by a silver Ford F-150 Platinum truck as she crossed the street in a marked crosswalk at around 11:30 p.m. Surveillance footage shows the truck braking and swerving to the left onto a curb as the driver’s side of the truck struck Estinger.

According to police, the driver fled and Estinger, who had celebrated her birthday at the Sarasota Opera House that same evening, died at the scene of the accident.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office found and seized the truck the next day at a residence in Palmetto. An investigation determined that Carroll, who officers said had stopped for speeding hours earlier, was the driver the night of the crash.

According to a press release, Carroll is currently awaiting extradition to the Sarasota County Jail.
