Boise students return for first day of school

BOISE, Idaho — Classes have started for students in the Boise School District. The day went smoothly for many excited teachers and students, but a possible gas leak caused some problems at Roosevelt Elementary.

  • Wednesday, August 14, was the first day of school in the Boise School District.
  • According to the Boise School District, Roosevelt Elementary School was evacuated “due to the smell of natural gas.”
  • Roosevelt students and staff are safe and have been able to return to school.

School has started again and it was a quiet morning for Whitney Elementary.

“We know they feel connected and that they belong here. So this first day brings us all back together and the learning journey begins,” says Rebecca Severson, principal of Whitney Elementary.

The students met their friends and teachers, said goodbye to their parents and welcomed the new school year.

We spoke to a fourth-grader, Kaiden, who says his favorite subject is math. He explains, “It just gets my mind going.”

Another student, Maverick, says his favorite activity at school is playing on the playground.

Luckily for him, some students were able to start their day on the playground.

Rebecca Severson, principal of Whitney Elementary School, says overall arrivals on the first day this Wednesday went well.

She says: “Trust the teachers, trust the process, be patient. The first few days will be hectic, but then you get into a routine, everything goes smoothly and we can get started.”

While it was a quiet day for most schools in the district, just 15 minutes down the road from Whitney.

Roosevelt Elementary had to evacuate its building.

According to a post by the Boise School District on (x), formerly known as Twitter, the reason for the evacuation was the smell of natural gas.

Students and staff walked from Roosevelt to Adams Elementary around 10:50 a.m. and remained there until the building was evacuated by Intermountain Gas.

At around 12:30 p.m. the students returned safely to Roosevelt.
