Bodycam footage released of 17-year-old shot by Baltimore police on Monday

BALTIMORE – Baltimore police have released body camera footage showing the moments when officers shot and Killing of a 17-year-old with a firearm on Monday evening.

The video shows an officer chasing the teenager, now identified as William Gardner, down North Stricker Street.

The unit was originally in the area to further investigate a shooting that had occurred an hour earlier.

The department says the teenager was standing with a group, grabbing his waistband and performing a sort of “security check.”

“This could indicate a person carrying a firearm in their waistband and checking to make sure it is still there and not dropped or moving,” said BPD Deputy Commissioner Brian Nadeau.

When police tried to attack him, Gardner ran away, Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at a press conference on Monday.

The agency says an officer got out of a patrol car to speak to the teenager, but he ran away.

Two police officers pursued Gardner in a car while one ran after him. The officers in the car warned the teenager several times, yelling, “Get on the ground” or “You’re going to get shot.”

The teenager continued to try to escape.

As Gardner approached an intersection, he pulled a gun from his hip and aimed it at the police officer pursuing him. At that moment, the officers shot Gardner.

In a press conference, officials said police fired up to 21 shots.

The three officers involved in the shooting were assigned administrative duties in accordance with protocol.

Whether officers used excessive force has yet to be determined as the shooting is being investigated by the BPD, the Attorney General’s Office and the Maryland State Police.

Hours after the family was shown the body-worn camera video on Friday, a group gathered at the scene of the shooting.

There were only a few weeks left until Gardner became a father.

“Cheer up. I just hope something good comes out of this,” said a neighbor.

A vigil for Gardner will be held on Saturday at 6 p.m.
