Bills want to play the first half against the Steelers mainly with regular players

Mike Tomlin announced Thursday after the Pittsburgh Steelers’ joint practice with the Buffalo Bills that the starters, including QB Russell Wilson, will play about four drives in the second preseason game on Saturday night. Bills head coach Sean McDermott announced today that his starters will play about a quarter and a half.

While it’s not the same, both sides should use their regular players for roughly the same amount of time. They’ve worked against each other in training together, so the individual matchups in this game are even more familiar.

Bills QB Josh Allen will be among the starters playing against the Steelers. The last time these two teams met, it was a cold, snowy Wild Card playoff game that saw the Steelers once again exit the postseason early.

This will likely serve as an annual preseason game, with the regulars playing more than in the other preseason games to get as close to the real thing as possible before the season starts. Both teams will likely rest at least a couple of key players each, but otherwise it will be a great simulation of a real game. For players like Zach Frazier, Payton Wilson and other young players, this is an invaluable opportunity to play against starting lineup players in a game where nothing is on the line.

With the starters getting more playing time than usual, that means the players on the roster are getting fewer opportunities. If Wilson ends up playing four drives, Justin Fields should get about the same number. That would likely take them to the middle of the third quarter and leave Kyle Allen with the remaining opportunities to close the game out.

Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee is likely to be out of action at quarterback again. However, the Steelers will use him in a variety of ways on special teams. He could also be used as a wide receiver, and he did some practice there during the last week of training camp.
