An RJD district councillor was shot dead in Hajipur, Bihar. The incident sparked widespread criticism within his party and even senior party leader Tejashwi Yadav made a social media post on the matter. He attacked the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government and accused it of failing to maintain law and order in the state.

Hajipur: In a shocking incident in Hajipur, Bihar, a municipal councillor was chased and shot dead by armed assailants. The dead man was identified as Pankaj Rai, a municipal councillor of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Rai ran into his house in a desperate attempt to save himself.

Police said Rai was standing near a cloth shop near his house when three men on motorcycles stopped near him. They started firing indiscriminately at the helpless man. In a desperate attempt to save himself, the councillor started running. He ran straight to his house.

The attackers, however, refused to let up. They got off their bikes, followed him into the house and continued shooting at him. The Ward 5 councilman was hit at least three times. When family members and his neighbors heard gunshots, they rushed out to save him. They took the bleeding man to the hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav reacts to murder of party councillor

Reacting to the killing of his party councillor, RJD leader and former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav attacked the Nitish Kumar government in the state, saying the Kumar-led NDA government had failed to maintain law and order in the state.

In a tweet in Hindi, he wrote: “NDA goons led by Nitish Kumar shot dead RJD councillor Pankaj Rai in Hajipur overnight. The chief minister and two of his deputies are sleeping peacefully while their goons are wreaking havoc.”

Meanwhile, the councillor’s family members said that he had filed a complaint with the police about 6 months ago in a dispute. However, the police have not taken any action in the matter. They suspect that the persons against whom the complaint was filed are behind the murder.

Investigations begin, police follow video surveillance footage

Meanwhile, Bihar Police has launched an investigation into the case. A report on NDTV said that Superintendent of Police (SP) Har Kishore Rai and his team reached the crime scene to collect evidence. They also visited the hospital where Pankaj Rai was taken after the shooting.

Police said they are currently reviewing surveillance camera footage in the area where the shooting occurred and will identify and arrest the suspects as soon as possible.
