Biden’s speech is scheduled for the first day of the DNC. Here’s what else is on today’s agenda.

Washington — The Democratic National Convention begins on Monday in Chicago, where the party will support its new presidential candidacy after Vice President Kamala Harris officially became the Democratic candidate Beginning of the month.

Less than a month after President Biden announced his resignationand thus brings unrest into the presidential election campaign: Democrats from across the country are flocking to the party convention at the United Center and McCormick Place in Chicago, where the party will ceremonially nominate Harris – and her new running mate – as their candidates.

The majority of the Democratic delegates voted for Harris as the party’s nominee earlier this month, cementing her status at the top of the list during a virtual roll call before the convention. DNC leaders then confirmed Harris as the nominee, along with her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

“Now the eyes of the world turn to Chicago, where our delegates will celebrate this historic electoral nomination with a ceremonial roll call and tell the story of Vice President Harris, Governor Walz and the Democratic Party as we prepare to defeat Donald Trump again,” party chairman Minyon Moore said in a statement when the nominations were confirmed.

With the Democrats’ newly assembled slate, Harris and Walz are expected to continue their pitches for the party at the convention, less than three months before the election. In addition to speeches from big names in the party, Walz will formally accept the vice presidential nomination on Wednesday night, and Harris will take the stage on the final night of the convention on Thursday to formally accept the presidential nomination.

What’s on the agenda?

Each day of the convention will have a theme related to the slogan “For the People, For Our Future.” Monday’s theme will revolve around the “For the People” element. The party will lay out how it argues that Democrats under the Biden-Harris administration have put the people first, comparing the record of the Harris-Walz ticket to that of former President Donald Trump.

Biden’s tenure and his decades in Washington are also expected to play a major role on Monday, as the party seeks to honor the president – and his decision to step down – while celebrating its new standard-bearer.

Anita Dunn, a former senior adviser to Biden who left the White House last month to join the main super PAC supporting Harris, said the president sees his role in the campaign as “chief volunteer” and is determined to ensure Trump is defeated in November.

“We stand today as a united party that is excited, that is energized, that is looking forward, but also recognizes that this is a very tough election campaign and that we have to go out and do the work and win it,” she said in an interview with “CBS Mornings” before the convention began on Monday.

Convention programming will take place Monday from 6:15 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET or 5:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. CT. The ceremonial roll call vote is scheduled to begin Tuesday, when delegates from across the country will gather to nominate Harris.

Who is speaking?

Although the official schedule has not yet been finalized, the congress organizers have already confirmed a handful of speakers who will open the first day of the congress.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson will speak at the convention on Monday night, as will First Lady Jill Biden and Mr Biden, who will deliver the keynote address on the first night. A source familiar with the planning also said said CBS News that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the party’s nominee in 2016, is also expected to speak on Monday evening.
