Bexar County tightens protective measures after two mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Bexar County will increase efforts to reduce its mosquito population after two people tested positive for West Nile virus, a county news release said.

The first mosquito was found in an eastern, unincorporated part of the county in a drainage canal near Glen Fair Drive.

The second mosquito was found in a western, unincorporated part of the county near Highway 90 and Kriewald Road.

While ongoing fogging efforts continue in the county’s public rights-of-way and parks, public service workers are also “taking aggressive action” in those areas, the release said.

The emergency services fog the mosquitoes early in the morning because the mosquitoes are most active at this time.

The Bexar County Office of Emergency Management (BCOEM) has launched an intensive local awareness campaign for both areas.

The office plans to distribute preventive information to citizens, with a focus on households with children, the press release said.

To protect against mosquitoes, the district suggests the following measures:

  • Drain water from garbage cans, gutters, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, flower pots, or other containers that have collected sprinkler or rainwater.

  • Dispose of old tires, barrels, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances and other items that are not used.

  • Keep swimming pools in good condition and chlorinate them sufficiently. Empty plastic swimming pools when not in use.

  • Clothing: Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long sleeves. This type of protection may be necessary for people who must work in areas where mosquitoes are present.

  • Repellent: Apply mosquito repellent to bare skin and clothing.
