Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar defends Kamala Harris as an effective solution to border problems

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday night, defending Kamala Harris against critics who complained she has not done enough to secure the southern border.

“She went to Mexico and campaigned to stop the traffickers,” he said. “And when the traffickers didn’t stop, she put them in jail.”

Salazar added: “When Donald Trump comes to Texas, he stands next to uniformed officers like mine. He is not there to help us – not for a second. He is a self-serving man. Just like when he brought down the border law. He has only made our job more difficult.”

Salazar also defended himself and the sheriffs who work along the border.

“And we are fighting with all our might to protect our border,” he added, “because in Texas we have always known that when we fight, we win.”

Salazar was one of numerous speakers – including former President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar of El Paso and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg – who made the case for Democrats on Wednesday.

The crowning conclusion of the third evening of the party convention was the speech by the Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, who officially accepted his nomination for Vice President.

Tim Walz accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for vice president tonight in Chicago, completing a lineup of speakers that included Oprah Winfrey and former President Bill Clinton.

Harris was scheduled to give a speech on Thursday evening, the final night of the convention.

Congressman Colin Allred of Dallas, who is challenging Republican Ted Cruz for his Senate seat, will address the delegates and endorse Harris.

Kimberly Mata-Rubio, whose daughter Lexi was one of the 19 students killed in the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting, will also address convention delegates.

In 2023, Mata-Rubio ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Uvalde after the incumbent resigned to run for a seat in the Texas Legislature. She continues her efforts as an advocate for stronger gun control.

The main DNC program is expected to run from approximately 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. CT. TPR will provide live coverage starting at 8 p.m. CT.
