Bengals Cuts: Ryan Rehkow gets the nod as punter after Brad Robbins’ injury

The Cincinnati Bengals will have a new punter for the start of the 2024 NFL season.

When final roster cuts were made, former starter Brad Robbins was placed on the injured list and was instructed to return to the active roster at some point, and will have to miss at least four games.

That leaves undrafted free agent Ryan Rehkow as the team’s primary punter entering Week 1. The former BYU Cougar will almost certainly keep that job for the first month of the season unless the team trades him for someone else.

Rehkow was initially signed by the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2024 NFL Draft, was released in June and signed with the Bengals at the start of training camp.

The punter battle was undoubtedly one of the biggest question marks heading into cutdown day. Although Rehkow showed some stellar performances in the preseason, he was too consistent to believe he would make the roster under normal circumstances.

However, Robbins suffered a hip flexor injury in practice that kept him out of action for several weeks. That gave Rehkow a chance to make the 53-man roster, and he is now the top punter.

With that in mind, Rehkow will need to perform well in the first four games to even have a chance of keeping his spot on the roster once Robbins is able to return from the injured list, or he will be released once Robbins is healthy and activated.
