Bears have “good chance” of bringing back summer fan favorites

UPDATE: According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, tight end Brenden Bates has finally been signed by the New York Jets.

“The Bears ultimately were unable to retain TE Brenden Bates,” Biggs said. “He was claimed by the Jets on waivers.”

ORIGINAL: The Chicago Bears – like the rest of the National Football League – had to make some difficult decisions on Tuesday.

Chicago had to trim its roster down to just 53 players after a long and interesting summer. The Bears were featured on Hard Knocks and had many players who impressed. However, the Bears were unable to retain all of their players before the deadline.

Two players who were unfortunately cut were tight end Brenden Bates and cornerback Reddy Steward. However, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, it sounds like both could return to the practice squad.

“Sounds like TE Brenden Bates, who had 6 catches for 100 yards in the preseason, has a good chance to make it back to the Bears’ practice squad,” Biggs said. “Nothing is confirmed yet, but there have been rumors around the league about him and they could keep the undrafted rookie out of Kentucky.”

“I would also expect CB Reddy Steward, the undrafted rookie from Troy, to re-sign with the Bears practice squad. Steward had 2 (interceptions) last week in Kansas City. Had a good run in training camp at the nickel position.”

Both Bates and Steward impressed all summer, leading many to hope they would earn a spot on the Bears’ 53-man roster. Unfortunately, they didn’t, but if they make the practice squad, we may see them with the Bears in 2024.
