Baywatch stars admit the show “really wasn’t good” and reveal how the actors made it great

The plot of “Baywatch” was “really not that good,” the series’ biggest stars said years later.

Baywatch starred David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Jeremy Jackson, Alexandra Paul, Carmen Electra, Yasmine Bleeth, David Charvet, Nicole Eggert and others. The series ran from 1989 to 2001 and at its peak had 1.2 billion viewers a week. Eggert, who played Summer Quinn, reunited with her former cast to reflect on the television series in the docuseries Baywatch: Moment in the Sun.

Almost 35 years later, the actors have to admit that the storylines were a bit absurd.

“The show really wasn’t good,” Hasselhoff admitted in the People magazine documentary series. “But we made it good because we had passion.”

Kelly Slater, who played young surfer Jimmy Slade, recalled filming an episode in which an octopus stole her surfboard and took her hostage.

“I felt that the text was completely nonsensical in many ways,” he said.

However, the “nonsensical” script seemed to have helped the show.

“We were the butt of jokes on ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ all the time, and every time he told a joke, our ratings went up,” explained co-creator Douglas Schwartz.

Despite the series’ success, the “Baywatch” actors didn’t earn much. According to Eggert, each star earned $3,500 per episode.

“I think at that point, the ‘Friends’ shows were each making $1 million an episode,” she said during the docuseries.

Erika Eleniak adds: “I remember freaking out when I saw my first paycheck after taxes. How am I honestly going to live on this money?”

“There is not a single rich actor on ‘Baywatch.’ Not a single one,” said Billy Warlock, who played the role of Eddie Kramer in two seasons of the series.

Eggert, who directed the “Baywatch” docuseries project, gave her fans an update on her journey with cancer at the premiere on Monday.

“I’m fine,” said Eggert People Magazine on the red carpet. “I’m in a grey area and have completed my treatment. I’m waiting for more pictures and hopefully maybe surgery.”

“There’s a lot of waiting involved, and that’s something I didn’t really understand and nobody really talks about,” she explained. “But the gray area is the hardest because you don’t know what’s happening and you just feel like you’re doing something productive while you’re in treatment.”

Eggert was diagnosed with stage 2 cribriform carcinoma of the breast cancer in 2023.
