His book list includes fiction such as Headshot by Rita Bullwinkel, which tells the story of eight teenage girls who take part in a boxing match in Reno, Nevada, and Job offers by Adelle Waldman, about low-wage workers at an upstate New York supermarket who endure tough shifts while dreaming of better opportunities.
It also contains non-fiction books such as Everyone who left here: The United States, Central America, and the emergence of a crisis by Jonathan Blitzer, who examines the flawed policies and corruption causing the migration crisis at the US-Mexico border, and Of boys and men: Why the modern man has problems, why it is important and what can be done about it by Richard Reeves, which explores the future of masculinity in a more just world.
Obama’s reading list for 2016 included a book by Indian Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri – her second novel, The lowlands.
The book explores the lives of two brothers in Calcutta against the backdrop of the Naxalite movement. This book was nominated for the Man Booker Prize 2013 and, alongside The lights by Eleanor Catton.
In addition to his book recommendations, Obama also released his playlist for summer 2024. You can check it out here:
As summer comes to a close, I wanted to share with you some songs I’ve been listening to lately – and it wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix. I hope you find something new to listen to! pic.twitter.com/aL400Ctpde
