Baltimore Ravens receive good news about Nate Wiggins’ injury

Baltimore Ravens rookie cornerback Nate Wiggins made the most of his preseason debut, but unfortunately it ended much sooner than he would have liked.

The first-round pick from Clemson quickly went to work, breaking up three opponents on the first drive alone, including a fourth-down punt. He played well the entire game after that until he went to the med bay in the third quarter to rest his right shoulder. A few minutes later, the team announced that Wiggins would miss the rest of the game with a shoulder injury.

After the game, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh did not provide any update on the status of Wiggins or other players who left Friday’s game.

Fortunately, Wiggins appears to have escaped serious injury, according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.

“The Ravens are confident that rookie CB Nate Wiggins, who injured his shoulder Friday night, has avoided a truly serious injury,” Zrebiec writes on X. “Wiggins could miss some practice, but the Ravens are still optimistic for Week 1.”

If Wiggins isn’t ready to start the regular season, the Ravens could find themselves in a difficult cornerback situation. Veteran Arthur Maulet, who performed well as the No. 3 cornerback last season, will have to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery before the season and could be out until October. Marlon Humphrey and Brandon Stephens should hold down the fort well enough, but given the former’s injury history, the loss of either could prove catastrophic.

Given Wiggins’ performance on Friday, it would be a huge boost to the secondary if he were ready to play at the start of the regular season.

“I’m very happy to see that,” Harbaugh said after the game. “I think they tackled (Nate Wiggins) a little bit, which was good to see, and heck yeah. When you’re a cornerback — a cornerback of his caliber — he wants that, so I think he was happy about it. He came in later and made the hit, so he played a good game.”
